FanGirl Friday

Third Star is released today but only in a few cinemas. I've hand-written a plea to my local art-house cinema asking that they show it, but as yet, no news. However, it will be available on DVD later this year, so huzzah for that.

That said, every time I've looked at the trailer, I get more convinced I'm going to be an emotional wreck after I've seen it. Here's the newest (slightly longer) trailer. Actually, here are TWO versions of it. I prefer the second one, though the first one has music from the film. ( Third Star trailers )

Mention of 'idfic' on several friends' LJs has made me realize that the reason I found the courage to start writing fanfic (when I'd long avoided creative writing altogether) is that it allows me to hide my id behind someone else's. The observant, engaged reader will always spot iddish tendencies (especially if they read more than one story by the same author), but they won't always be sure whether they came from the writer or from canon.

This realization makes me a smidge (but only a very teeny, weeny smidge) more sympathetic to professional authors who freak out about their characters being sexed up in fanfiction: the pro-author has exposed their Id and now some stranger is rewriting it, reshaping it and inviting others to believe things about hir Id that aren't necessarily there.

I just posted this in response to a friend's sadness at the state of fandom, but I feel like reposting it here because, hell, I'm getting sick and tired of being told what I can and cannot write.

When one of my friends from uni said she'd like to come up to stay for the weekend, Mr Kis got the Tourist Guide bit between his teeth and began drawing up a list of Interesting Things to Do.

Top of his list was the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre, a collection of ... sculptures? robots? created by Russian born artist Eduard Bersudsky. We arrived early (obviously, as I'm compulsive about punctuality), and wandered around looking at the exhibits. They were odd assemblages of scrap metal, carved wooden models and animal bones - vaguely disturbing and occasionally comic.

And then the show started. Lights! Music! Multi-coloured shadows. I don't know whether it was what Bersudsky intended, but I found myself wondering about the nature of the soul and the brutal collision of flesh and metal (thank you Joss Whedon and Kazuya Minekura). It's amazing how movement evokes (implies?) life and intelligence. And knowing there really isn't any life involved, made me question a lot of my assumptions. Sound played a huge part too. A machine in movement only has so many operations it can perform before it begins repeating itself, but throw in some Albioni and each movement acquires an individual significance. Very strange.
